y = -3x^2 +x +1
The coefficient of the x^2 term is negative so it opens facing down
- means down
+ mean up
-3x is a negative coefficient so it faces downward. If it was positive, then it would face upward.
It is easier to figure it out if you can see it.
Also easier if you rewrite the equation in quadratic form:
y = 4x² + 4x + 5
